X-Ray Inspection Showing Spool-type Insert with Foaming Adhesive

Applied Aerospace Structures Corp., as of March 2004, has added radiography to our non-destructive inspection capability.  This X-ray system augments our NDI thru-transmission ultrasonic scanning facilities.

Non-destructive X-ray of a bonded structure can provide real-time verification of:

  • Proper potting of inserts and bushings
  • Suitable expansion of foaming adhesive between honeycomb core and adjacent features
  • Appropriate geometry of honeycomb cells

Real-Time X-Ray Inspection Unit

The X-ray unit is automatically operated from an external control source located near the X-ray stand in a shielded environment. The computer and monitor allow the operator to view the exposures real-time, while the system scans at a rate of 60 inches per minute

System Features

  • Continuous scanning at a maximum rate of 60 inches per minute
  • Capable of scanning parts up to 80 inches wide by 160 inches long by 3 inches thick
  • Real-time viewing of scan during operation
  • Digital record retention of all scans
